How the self-assessment works

Three simple steps to your personal MPU assessment — based on the assessment criteria (BK 5) of the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt).

  1. Step 1

    Pick your case

Alcohol, drugs, points, or mixed substance use — you choose what applies. The tool only asks about what's relevant for your constellation.

  2. Step 2

    Answer detail questions

Blood alcohol level, substance, frequency, point count — every question is derived directly from the BK-5 hypotheses. Your assessor hypothesis (A1–A4, D1–D4 or V1–V3) is determined automatically.

  3. Step 3

    Receive an instant assessment

You get the hypothesis, difficulty level, estimated readiness and concrete module recommendations — non-binding, no signup required.

Frequently asked questions

What you should know before you start.

What is the MPU self-assessment and what's the benefit for me?
The free MPU self-assessment is an interactive 10-question test that gives you an initial estimate of the assessor hypothesis that will likely apply to you, based on the official German assessment criteria BK 5 (5th edition) — so whether your case falls under A1–A4 (alcohol), D1–D4 (drugs) or V1–V3 (traffic offences/points). You also see the estimated difficulty level, your current preparation status, and concrete module recommendations to work on next. The result does not replace an official assessment, but gives you a solid orientation on where you stand and what matters next.
Is the self-assessment really free and anonymous?
Yes, the self-assessment is 100% free and usable without signup. You don't need an email address, an account, or payment details to get to the result. Your answers are processed anonymously and only stored locally in your browser so you can resume the test if interrupted. We only ask for personal data if you voluntarily choose to book a premium module or the detailed evaluation report — all GDPR-compliant.
How accurate is the assessment really?
The self-assessment is based on the official assessment criteria BK 5 (5th edition) of the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) — the same regulatory framework real assessors use during the MPU. The hypothesis mapping (A1–A4, D1–D4, V1–V3) and requirements (e.g. abstinence duration 6/12/15 months) follow current guidelines. The assessment is a well-founded orientation — not an official report. It does not replace a session with a traffic psychologist or the official assessment by a licensed institution like TÜV or DEKRA, but it gives you a realistic first impression.
How long does the self-test take?
On average 3 to 5 minutes. You answer 10 questions — depending on your case (alcohol, drugs, points or mixed substance use) only the detail questions relevant to you are shown, the tool guides you step by step. You can jump back, change an answer or pause the test at any time — your next session resumes exactly where you left off.
What happens after the result? Do I have to buy anything?
No, nothing. You get your result displayed for free — including hypothesis, difficulty level and preparation status. Optionally, you can then book matching preparation modules from Dein MPU-Buddy (Basic €199, Premium €279, or Kombi Premium €349 — each with 6 months of access). The modules are not mandatory. You can also simply take your assessment as a starting point and use it for a personal consultation or with a traffic psychologist.
